khitan small script character-18b08

Khitan Small Script Character 18B08

9/471

𘬈 means “white” in Khitan; dotted 𘬉 is its masculine counterpart. Tradition credits Liao prince Yelü Diela with developing a small script for Khitan in the 10th century, using Chinese character forms and principles of an alphabet used by Uyghurs; a 2026 study argues it was formalized later under Liao Emperor Shengzong. The oldest securely dated surviving inscription is from 1051. Khitan small script persisted under Jin; Jurchen script drew on it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘬈 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
