What 𘬆 means
Its code label is not a Khitan reading.
Khitan small script combines word signs and sound signs; sound signs often cluster into words. The Unicode Standard, Version 18.0, describes it as partly deciphered, with some sound values unknown.
How was Khitan small script used?
It recorded Khitan across several dynasties.
Created around 925 and credited to Yelü Diela, its forms drew on Chinese characters and its sound system on Uyghur writing. Khitan large script was a separate system for the same language.
A 2025 study calls the Chongxi-era Yelü Yugulin Taishi epitaph the earliest known small-script inscription.
Use continued under Liao, Western Liao (Qara Khitai), and Jin until a 1191 edict ended it. Surviving texts are mostly elite epitaphs. A 2026 account lists official records, poems, and translations among uses; a 2025 study traces later Jurchen writing to Khitan models.

1Why does 𘬆 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
