What 𘬅 means

As of 2023, its exact gloss was uncertain.

One lexicon suggests 𘬅 may be an alternate form of 𘲣, but that identification is tentative. Khitan Small Script mixes signs for whole words with signs for sounds; the sound signs usually group into words.

When was Khitan Small Script created?

It was devised to write Khitan; its creation date is debated.

Traditional accounts credit Liao prince Yelü Diela and place its creation around 925; they also claim a Uyghur-script influence, although the scripts look little alike. A 2026 study argues it was standardized later. The earliest securely dated surviving example is the 1051 epitaph of Wugulin Taishi, a carved stone tomb memorial. Khitan Large Script was a separate system for the same language. Small-script writing continued under the Jin dynasty, chiefly on epitaphs and monuments. Historic text ran in vertical columns from right to left; digital text can also be laid out horizontally or linearly.
