What 𘬓 means

They are two scholarly transcriptions of its sound value.

Khitan phonograms usually group into blocks spelling one word.

Why was the small script developed?

To spell Khitan more flexibly than the large script allowed.

Traditional records credit Yelü Diela, brother of Liao founder Abaoji, with creating it about 925. It adapted Chinese character forms and drew on Uyghur sound-based writing, letting writers spell Khitan endings alongside whole-word signs. A 2026 study instead argues for later standardization under Emperor Shengzong; the earliest securely dated surviving inscription is a 1051 epitaph. Under Liao, Western Liao, and Jin rule the script served records, tomb inscriptions, poems, translations, and exams; Jin banned it in 1191. Jurchen writers under Jin later modeled their own scripts on Khitan systems.

Why does 𘬓 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
