What does 𘯿 mean in Khitan text?
It is one character in the Khitan small script.
Khitan small script was made to write Khitan, the language of a medieval people whose states lay in northern China. It was used alongside Chinese writing. Some signs stand for whole words; sound signs usually join into clusters that spell one word. In traditional layout, columns run top to bottom from right to left; inside a sound cluster, characters are read left to right, then downward.
Khitan small script used shapes inspired by Chinese characters, while its sound system is linked to Uyghur writing. Traditional accounts date its creation around 925. In 2026, a study argued it may have been systematized later: the earliest securely dated surviving inscription is the 1051 epitaph of Yelü Yugulin Taishi. It remained in use through Liao, Qara Khitai, and Jin rule; later Jurchen scripts modeled themselves on both Khitan scripts. A Jin edict ended official use in 1191, and the small script was first identified in modern times in 1922.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘯿 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
