What 𘬀 means
The word group just before it.
A cluster is several Khitan characters read as one word; this repeat mark points to the whole group.
The script outlasted Liao rule
Yelü Diela, brother of the Liao emperor, devised the script about 925 to write Khitan. Accounts link its design to Uyghur writing, though the forms differ.
A 2025 study identifies the oldest surviving sample as the Liao tomb inscription for Yelü Yugulin Taishi, from the Chongxi era.
Small Script persisted under Western Liao and Jin rule, appearing on memorials, monuments, bronze mirrors, and tally tokens.
A line can hide the grouping
Historical Khitan texts ran in vertical columns, right to left, grouping characters into words. A horizontal, one-character-at-a-time view can hide the group 𘬀 repeats.
