Tangut Component-768

𘫿 is not a Tangut word — it is a component, a recurring piece scholars use to index Tangut characters. The Tangut script was created for the Western Xia empire and carried Buddhist, official and secular texts. It even has an official twin, 𘤻, split off by how the strokes join.

What 𘫿 means

It is a component, not a standalone Tangut word.

Modern Tangut dictionaries and research tools list 𘫿 as one of the pieces that build complete characters. Depending on the character around it, a component can contribute sound, meaning, or pure structure — which is why it has no settled translation or reading alone.

Tangut was the script of the Western Xia empire (Xixia), created in 1036 under emperor Li Yuanhao as a state project — an early prestige task was a Tangut Buddhist Canon. A Khara-khoto manuscript dated to the 12th or early 13th century already shows it carrying translated Chinese texts.

Is 𘫿 the same as 𘤻?

No — 𘫿 is the joined-stroke twin of Component-316 (𘤻).

Tangut components encode whether strokes join. After comparing historical dictionaries and manuscripts, Unicode 13.0 split the shape into two code points — 𘫿 joined, 𘤻 unjoined. The choice matters for indexing or transcribing real characters; on screen the pair confuses easily.

Specialist and archival: useful in Tangut study, not in ordinary conversation.

It is not a Chinese character and not a complete Tangut word — do not read it alone.

Drift: A 2023 Unicode proposal challenged Component-768 assignments in 𘄶 and 𘅱 — a reminder that manuscript-based component analysis can still be revised.

3

What is the pronunciation of 𘫿?

None of its own. A component borrows the sound of the complete Tangut character it sits inside; alone it has no fixed reading.

Why does 𘫿 show as an empty box?

Your font has no Tangut glyphs. Install a Tangut font — BabelStone's scan fonts map source scans to private-use points, so a look-alike glyph is not automatically this character.

Is Tangut still used today?

Not in everyday writing. It survives as scholarship: manuscripts, inscriptions and dictionaries from sites like Khara-khoto.
