What 𘰍 means
“De” is reconstructed, not a direct recording. Reference catalogs assign this romanized value to the sign. Readings are rebuilt from inscriptions and Chinese phonetic comparisons; sound signs usually form word blocks, alongside signs for whole words.
Yelü Diela, younger brother of the ruler of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty, created the script around 925 to write the Khitan language. Its forms draw on Chinese characters; its phonetic system was inspired by Uyghur writing. It appears in stone memorials, records, poems, histories and translations. Dated texts run from 1053 to 1175; official use ended in 1191. The neighboring Jurchen people later modeled their scripts on the Khitan pair. Belgian missionary E. P. Louis Kervyn identified Khitan small-script writing at a Liao mausoleum in 1922.

Questions people ask
1Why does Khitan text need special layout?
Khitan text can run vertically, group signs into word blocks in horizontal lines, or show characters one by one horizontally. Software needs extra layout rules for the blocks, so a font may show 𘰍 without arranging a full text line.
