What 𘰓 means

Read it in context. In the recorded word 𘰓𘰔, the two glyphs are transcribed oyḷm (also oyḷum) and mean “my son.”

When did this script begin?

Its early date is debated. The small script wrote Khitan alongside Chinese in the Liao Empire and drew on Chinese character forms. Traditional accounts date its creation to 924/925; the earliest securely dated surviving text is a 1051 epitaph, an inscribed memorial. A 2026 study argues it was standardized later under Emperor Shengzong. Jurchen writing later drew on Khitan and Chinese models; the Jin abolished Khitan writing in 1191.
