What 𘰧 means
A sign's role becomes clearer inside a Khitan word cluster. Khitan small script was used alongside Chinese writing under Liao rule. It relied more on sound signs than the larger Khitan script: signs for sounds often joined in compact blocks to spell words. Its forms drew on Chinese writing; Jurchen writing later adapted Khitan script traditions.
It appeared in records, inscriptions, poetry, histories, translations, and exams. After Liao fell, use continued under Jin rule until the court discontinued Khitan writing in 1191. Khitan small-script inscriptions were rediscovered in 1922, renewing modern study. In a word cluster, one sign may be only part of the spelling.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘰧 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
