What 𘰴 means
It represents the reconstructed consonant d. Small-script sound signs normally combine into a compact word group; the group, not a single sign, carries a word’s spelling.
The small script wrote Khitan alongside Chinese and Khitan Large Script. Tradition dates its creation to around 925 and credits Yelü Diela, younger brother of the Liao dynasty’s founder. A 2026 study questions that date: the oldest securely dated text is the 1051 Wugulin Taishi tomb inscription, over a century later. Khitan writing remained official under Jin rule until its abolition by edict in 1191. Chinese character forms influenced the design; the neighboring Jurchen people later adapted Khitan models. Historical words were grouped in vertical columns read right to left; this page isolates one sign.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘰴 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
