What 𘰿 means
Its codepoint label is an identifier, not an English gloss. The script uses logograms for whole words and phonograms for sounds; phonograms often combine into word blocks. Many phonetic values remain unknown.
How did Khitan writing develop?
It was made for Khitan and continued under Jin rule. The small script grew alongside Khitan Large Script. Its forms drew on Chinese characters and reportedly took inspiration from Uyghur writing.
The traditional creation date is about 925; a 2026 study argues the script was systematized later and names the Wugulin Taishi epitaph of 1051 as the earliest securely dated survivor. Later Jurchen writing adapted Khitan models.
Original inscriptions used vertical columns. Digital horizontal display needs shaping support to keep a word's component signs together.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘰿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
