What 𘱲 means
It marks a sound in a Khitan word.
Two scholarly transcriptions render it î and í as tentative pronunciation guides, not translations. In Khitan Small Script, sound signs join into word clusters; alone, 𘱲 cannot identify the whole word.
When did Khitan Small Script take shape?
Tradition dates its creation around 925; later evidence complicates that.
The Khitan people used Small Script beside the separate Large Script to write their language. Tradition credits Yelü Diela, brother of Liao's founder, and links its design to Uyghur writing, though the scripts look different. It appears in Liao, Western Liao (Qara Khitai), and Jin records, mainly on stone epitaphs, monuments, and objects.
One 2026 study argues it was systematized later, perhaps to aid administration of a multiethnic empire. It identifies Wugulin Taishi's 1051 epitaph as the earliest securely dated surviving example.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘱲 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
