khitan small script character-18c73

Khitan Small Script Sign ï

372/471

Scholars reconstruct 𘱳 as ï, a Khitan sound rather than a word. Khitan small script was made for the Khitan language; tradition credits Yelü Diela around 925, though the earliest securely dated surviving inscription is from 1051, and a 2026 study argues it was systematized later. Tradition says it drew on Uyghur writing; the script continued under Jin dynasty rule until a ban in 1191. Phonetic signs form word clusters.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘱳 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
