Text symbol

What 𘲒 means

Kane's 2009 graph index gives this glyph no proposed meaning or sound.

Khitan Small Script mixes whole-word signs with sound signs; sound signs usually form clusters to spell a word. The index does not identify which role 𘲒 had.

What was Khitan Small Script made to do?

Around 925, the Khitan official Yelü Diela is credited with creating it to write Khitan. It drew on Chinese-character writing and reportedly on Uyghur script, despite few visible similarities.

Carved epitaphs (tomb memorials) are the main surviving source; Khitan writing also appears on monuments, bronze mirrors and tallies. Jurchen rulers in the Jin dynasty adapted Khitan models. A Jin decree ended official Khitan-script use in 1191; by the late Yuan to early Ming period, the script was largely unreadable.

Why does 𘲒 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
