What 𘲖 means
It is one character in Khitan Small Script. U18C96 is a code-point index, not a Khitan reading. The script uses logograms (signs for whole words) and phonograms (sound signs), which can form compact clusters representing a word.
How was Khitan Small Script used?
It wrote Khitan under Liao, Qara Khitai (Western Liao), and Jin. Traditional accounts date its creation to about 925 and credit Yelü Diela; they say the Uyghur script inspired it. A 2026 study contests that chronology: it identifies the 1051 Wugulin Taishi epitaph as the earliest securely dated surviving text and argues that the script was systematized later for administration. Most surviving texts are elite tomb inscriptions, though Khitan writing also served diplomacy and public affairs. The Small Script stood beside a separate Large Script; the Jurchen, founders of Jin, later modeled their systems on both. Jin authorities ended official Khitan-script use in 1191.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘲖 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
