When was Khitan small script created?
Around 925, to write Khitan.
Yelü Diela, a prince of northern China's Liao dynasty, devised it. Its forms drew on Chinese characters; the western Uyghur script reportedly inspired it, though their forms differ.
Texts date to 983, chiefly elite tomb epitaphs. Jurchen rulers of the Jin dynasty ended official use in 1191 and modeled their scripts on Khitan. It was unreadable by late Yuan–early Ming, then rediscovered in 1922.
Why does 𘲡 show as a box?
The selected font may lack this glyph.
As of 2026, BabelStone Khitan Small Linear includes the encoded Khitan small-script set. A font without these glyphs may show an empty box; a supporting font changes the display, not the character.

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
