What 𘲠 means
Its Unicode label identifies it, but does not translate it.
Khitan small script uses logograms (whole-word signs) and phonograms (sound signs), which usually combine into word blocks. Its label does not say which role 𘲠 has.
When was Khitan small script first written?
Traditional accounts date its creation to 924 or 925.
The Liao Shi (“History of Liao”) credits the script's creation to Yelü Diela, brother of the Liao founder. A 2026 study questions that chronology. The earliest securely dated Khitan inscription is a 1051 tomb text for Wugulin Taishi.
Khitan writing appeared on tombs and official objects. Its forms drew on Chinese characters and its sound system on Uyghur writing; Jurchen script later adapted Khitan models. Jin authorities ended official use in 1191. Scholars identified the inscriptions as Khitan in 1922. Traditional text ran in right-to-left vertical columns; signs within each word block read left-to-right, then top-to-bottom. Alternate layouts were stylistic, not semantic.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘲠 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
