lepcha letter ka

Lepcha Letter Ka

1/74

ᰀ is the Lepcha letter ka: its basic syllable has a k sound followed by an unwritten “a.” It is a building block inside Lepcha (Róng) words, where vowel and consonant marks shape the syllable. The Lepcha script is historically derived from Tibetan writing.

What ᰀ means

Lepcha writing grew from Tibetan forms and changed direction. Unicode describes the script as directly derived from Tibetan. When Lepcha shifted from vertical columns to left-to-right lines, corresponding letterforms were turned about 90 degrees counterclockwise.

Unicode places its likely creation around 1720 and identifies Sikkim king Chakdor Namgyal as its probable inventor. Lepcha, Sikkimese, Tibetan, and Nepalese traditions give differing accounts of the script's beginnings, so this is a likely origin story rather than a settled attribution.

What was Lepcha writing used for?

It carried religious writing, stories, teaching, and everyday records. Buddhist missionaries translated Tibetan religious works into Lepcha, and those texts also carried indigenous Lepcha beliefs. Later Christian missionaries produced Lepcha translations, hymns, and sermons.

A catalog from 1846 includes alphabet and writing-practice books, moral teaching, stories, and religious works. A 1903 collection records letter-writing exercises and calculations of auspicious times. Lepcha writing served religious, literary, educational, and practical purposes.

Why does ᰀ show as a box or look wrong?

The font needs Lepcha coverage, and the app needs script shaping.

Lepcha vowel and final-consonant marks work with the base letter, and some can be reordered when a word is shaped. Without a Lepcha-capable font, ᰀ may appear as a box; without adequate OpenType support, marks may land in the wrong place. SIL's 2026 Mingzat documentation describes this shaping requirement. Different fonts can draw the same character differently without changing its identity.

1

Why does ᰀ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
