lepcha subjoined letter ra

Lepcha Subjoined Letter Ra

38/74

Type ᰥ after the Lepcha base consonant and any nukta (a small spelling mark), before vowel signs; it marks a medial r within the syllable. Lepcha writing was based on Tibetan models, then developed its own horizontal layout and spelling rules. Despite “subjoined” in its name, ᰥ is encoded after the consonant and shaped into the pair.

What ᰥ means

Type ᰥ after the base consonant and any nukta.

Write the consonant, an optional nukta (a small spelling mark), then ᰥ; vowel signs come after the medial. In a medial conventionally transcribed as -ry-, ᰤ follows ᰥ. Lepcha shaping may place or fuse the mark beside its onset, so the visible position can differ from the stored order.

For traditional retroflex spellings—consonants made with the tongue curled back—ᰥ appears in sequences conventionally transcribed as kra, hra, and gra. A preceding nukta helps distinguish those spellings from ordinary clusters.

What does ᰥ do in a Lepcha syllable?

It marks the medial r sound within the same syllable.

It is a spelling part, not a word on its own. Lepcha (also called Róng) writing uses it inside syllables; written works include stories, prayers, blessings, poems, folklore and religious texts.

The script was based directly on Tibetan writing and shifted from vertical columns to left-to-right lines, with its own medial and final-consonant rules. It is thought to have been devised around 1720, an origin tradition rather than this character’s first attestation; a handwritten Lepcha text dated c. 1800 shows it in use. Traditional spellings transcribed as kra, hra, and gra used ᰥ for retroflex sounds; later dedicated letters made those readings less ambiguous.

Why is ᰥ written after the consonant?

Its written order and its shaped position do different jobs.

Despite “subjoined” in its name, ᰥ is a spacing form encoded to the right of a consonant, then ligated with it in Lepcha-aware shaping.

A font without Lepcha shaping may leave it detached or anchor it differently. That can change how the pair looks, but not the mark’s spelling role.

Technical and orthographic: this mark belongs within Lepcha spelling.

It marks a medial r; it is not the standalone base letter ᰛ.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᰥ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Lepcha block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
