What sound does ᰛ represent?
It marks an r consonant with an inherent a vowel.
In Lepcha's syllable-based writing, a consonant normally carries an unwritten vowel a. So ᰛ writes the r consonant with that built-in vowel, conventionally shown as ra in a Latin-letter spelling. A vowel mark can change it; syllable-final r uses a separate sign, ᰲ.
One historical attribution credits Sikkim's King Chakdor Namgyal with creating the script around 1720, though this does not establish a single inventor. The earliest dated Lepcha documents identified are witness statements deposited on 14 April 1828, after the 1826 murder of Lepcha Prime Minister Bholod. Later writing includes alphabet primers, stories, prayers, legends, poetry, songs, cultural writing, and religious works.
Why is Lepcha writing linked to Tibetan?
Its structure developed from a Tibetan writing model.
Tibetan script is a writing system whose precursor forms used vertical columns. Lepcha turned that structure into horizontal, left-to-right writing and added dedicated signs for consonants at the ends of syllables. The connection is historical, not just a resemblance between letter shapes.
One cautious account connects this development to Buddhist missionary activity in the 1700s. After Sikkim recognized Lepcha as an official language in 1977, school textbooks followed.
