What ⹈ means
It identifies a service by its hymn line-up. Syrnikov’s Typicon is a church-service guide; a troparion, kontakion and oikos are forms of church hymn.
The wider Typicon-mark system is attributed to Nicon of the Black Mountain, an 11th century Byzantine liturgist. Syrnikov’s exact system appears in his 1910 guide and derives from older marks attributed to St. Gennadius around 1500. A separate Ukrainian Greek Catholic guide, using the Byzantine rite, appeared in Lwów in 1899 and uses a different set of signs.
