What 𝓞 means
It marks O as a variable in a separate letter style. In formulas, this calligraphic O can be distinguished from plain O; the notation around it tells you what it represents.
The use of letters in algebra developed over centuries. In 1591, French mathematician François Viète used capital letters for quantities whose values were unknown or fixed, an early step toward modern equations. Mathematical alphabets later gave letter styles their own character forms, so a styled letter can remain distinct in plain-text formulas.
Use 𝓞 for math, not ordinary text styling
Unicode intends these mathematical alphabets for math or technical notation, where letter styles can mark distinct symbols. In ordinary prose, use a regular O with text formatting; 𝓞 remains a separate text character.

2Can text software turn 𝓞 into O?
Yes. NFKC is a Unicode compatibility-normalization step; software that applies it folds 𝓞 to O. Tools that preserve exact characters keep the distinction.
Why does 𝓞 show as a box?
A missing glyph in the selected font or app can make it appear as a box. A font that includes the character can display it, and mathematical fonts may draw its script outline differently.
