What 𝒪 means
The formula gives the letter its meaning.
Script letters give math an extra alphabet for distinguishing variables. Chancery names the formal Renaissance Italian handwriting used by Venice and Rome’s government offices around 1447; roundhand is its rounded companion. Unicode 3.1 unified them because math texts usually treated them as interchangeable; Unicode 14.0 added selectors after authors documented meaningful contrasts.
