What 𝓸 means
Its formula defines the quantity; the bold script style distinguishes the letter. It has no universal value; each formula assigns its own.
A 1999 proposal notes that scientific publishers already used bold, italic, and script letters to keep mathematical symbols distinct. Separate characters let plain text retain those meanings.
Why does 𝓸 look different across fonts?
Math fonts can draw script letters differently. Unicode's chart uses a roundhand drawing, while mathematical fonts may choose other script designs. The bold script alphabet has no variation selector to force a single look, so the font supplies the visible form.
Can text cleanup turn 𝓸 into plain o?
Yes: NFKC can reduce it to ordinary o. NFKC is compatibility normalization, a text-cleanup step that folds styled forms back to their base letters. Unicode warns against applying it blindly to mathematical text because it can erase distinctions between symbols. Preserve the styled character wherever that mathematical distinction matters.
Best suited to mathematical notation, where script and weight can distinguish symbols; in ordinary text, it reads as decorative.
In a formula, replacing 𝓸 with plain o can erase a variable distinction.

1Why does 𝓸 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
How to type 𝓸
𝓸\1D4F8Codes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
