What ⟩ means
It closes an angle-bracket pair opened by ⟨. In Dirac's bra-ket notation used by physicists, |ψ⟩ is a ket: a label for a quantum state. ⟨a, b⟩ can write an ordered pair, and Z notation, a formal software-specification language, writes sequences the same way.

1Why does ⟩ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
