What ߰ means
Read the vowel as long and low. Write ߰ after an N’Ko vowel: it combines a low tone with vowel length. The same spelling can be pronounced differently across Manding varieties.
Sùlemáana Kántɛ devised N’Ko in 1949 to write Manding languages and support mother-tongue education. As of 2026, N’Ko supports literacy and a shared written form across Manding communities in Guinea, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire. Its form is a ligature—a joined shape—made from the short low-tone sign ߬ and a long-vowel form. The separate sign ߯ marks long high tone.
