What ߲ means
It tells you to nasalize the vowel.
Sulemaana Kantè developed N’Ko as a separate script after experimenting with Arabic and Latin writing, unveiling it in Bingerville on April 14, 1949. It was designed to represent Manding sounds accurately, including tone, vowel length and nasal vowels, and to support literacy in people’s own languages, including Islamic education.
Before N’Ko, Manding was also written in Ajami: Arabic letters adapted to write African languages. Manding Ajami is attested by the late seventeenth century. N’Ko is a distinct script that became a shared literary medium across Manding languages—including Bamanan, Jula, Maninka and Mandinka—for Islamic teaching as well as Manding history and culture.
How do I type ߲ with a tone mark?
Keep ߲ between the vowel and its tone mark.
In stored N’Ko text, put ߲ after the vowel and before its tone mark. One vowel can carry both; a font with N’Ko mark positioning places them on opposite sides of the base.
In N’Ko writing, this mark belongs to the word or number it modifies.
A bare ߲ needs the vowel or digit it modifies; it has no reading on its own.
