combining grave accent

Combining Grave Accent

1/112

To place this mark over a letter, type the letter first and U0300 after it. Ancient Greek used it as the varia, an accent for low or falling voice pitch; Mandarin Pinyin uses it for the fourth, falling tone, and Vietnamese uses it to spell tone. Alone, it can float or appear on a dotted circle because no letter anchors it.

What ̀ means

Type the letter first, then U0300. A combining mark is stored after the character it modifies: à is the letter a followed by this mark. The precomposed à can look identical but is stored as one character.

What does the grave accent mean in different languages?

The language decides what the mark signals. In Ancient Greek, the varia (“low” accent) marked low or falling voice pitch, part of a system that used accents to show spoken melody. The acute marked a rise; the circumflex rose and then fell. Greek accent notation is attested by the era of Aristotle; the familiar three-accent system is usually dated to around 200 BCE in Alexandria.

A Greek editing convention could place a grave where a word-final acute came before the next word; surviving papyri show that practice was not uniform. Mandarin Pinyin—the spelling system for Mandarin Chinese—uses it for the fourth, falling tone. Vietnamese also places U0300 with other marks on a vowel to spell its tone; “grave” names the mark’s shape, not a universal pronunciation rule.

Why does the mark float or disappear?

It has no spacing of its own and attaches to a base. This nonspacing mark normally adds no width, and fonts position it relative to the preceding letter. The same sequence can look different across renderers.

At the start of a string, no letter precedes it, so it may appear detached. Reference charts may show an isolated mark over a dotted circle so its position is visible; the circle is a guide, not part of the character. When several marks modify one letter, they follow that letter; Unicode normalization may reorder or compose some sequences.

A technical spelling mark that belongs with a word; alone, it reads as an incomplete fragment.

Alone, it has no letter to modify; use a spacing mark for a standalone stroke.
