What ́ means
Use Unicode input to insert the separate mark. Accent menus and dead keys—keys that wait for your next letter—normally produce accented letters instead. For this exact mark, use How to type or the palette.
What did the acute accent originally mean?
In ancient Greek, it marked high pitch. Greek accent writing appears in Alexandria around 200 BC, helping readers pronounce writing without spaces. Its traditional attribution to the scholar Aristophanes of Byzantium is uncertain.
Greek later shifted from pitch to stress: which syllable receives emphasis. French uses the acute, called accent aigu, to distinguish a vowel sound in é. Printer Robert Estienne used it for word-final é in 1530. The stroke's function depends on the language, not its shape alone.

2Why is my accent floating?
The base may be missing, or attachment failed. Check that the mark follows your letter; the font and text renderer also affect placement.
Why does Backspace remove only the accent?
It depends on the editor. A letter plus this mark forms one visible text unit, but some editors delete its stored characters separately.
