Not true

174/256

⊭ denies a semantic guarantee: the left side can be true while the right side is false. It marks non-entailment between assumptions and a conclusion, or a structure’s failure to satisfy formulas. With no premises, ⊭ φ means φ is not always true—not that it is always false.

What ⊭ means

It says the left side does not guarantee the right. In the not true symbol ⊭, a valuation means an assignment of truth values. In Γ ⊭ φ, some valuation makes Γ true and φ false. This does-not-entail notation states a relation between formulas in the metalanguage—the part of logic that describes them—not a connective inside them.

The crossed double turnstile has a history tied to Frege’s assertion stroke, a mark for asserting a proposition. Later logic used the double turnstile for semantic consequence or model satisfaction; crossing it denies that relation.

What does ⊭ rule out?

It denies a guarantee, not every possible conclusion. P ⊭ Q means some interpretation makes P true and Q false. It does not say Q is false in every case, or that P Q. With no premises, ⊭ φ says φ is not a tautology: some valuation makes it false.

Model theory also uses the double turnstile for satisfaction: A Γ says structure A satisfies formulas Γ, while A ⊭ Γ denies that satisfaction.

How do I type ⊭?

Use \nvDash in a LaTeX setup that defines it. The command depends on the symbol package and engine.

A formal-logic mark; in ordinary chat it reads as specialist notation without an explanation.

It denies entailment; it does not simply mean “false.”

These assumptions do not semantically force that conclusion.
P can be true while Q is false.
φ is not valid under every valuation.

Questions people ask

3

Does ⊭ mean the conclusion is false?

No. It means at least one interpretation makes the premises true and the conclusion false; the conclusion may still be true under another interpretation.

Why does this math symbol display as a box?

The selected font may lack a glyph for ⊭, so the app shows a missing-character box. A font with mathematical-symbol coverage can display it.

Is ⊭ the same as ?

No. ⊭ denies semantic entailment across interpretations; denies derivability in a formal proof system.
