What 𛇎 means
It marks one syllable in local Jiangyong speech.
Nüshu forms draw on Chinese character forms but record local sounds; one sign can stand for several words with the same or similar sound.
Why did women use Nüshu?
It let local women write and share their own literature.
Historically, women with little access to schooling wrote letters, songs and life stories. A sanzhaoshu (“third-day letter”) brought wedding wishes to a bride; they also sang Nüshu at gatherings and wrote on fans and cloth.
The earliest written account, from 1931, describes women singing poems from fans. Origin theories range from centuries earlier to the nineteenth century. Since the 1980s, Nüshu has also been studied and preserved as heritage.
