What Ω means
After a number, it gives resistance to electric current.
Telegraph networks needed comparable resistance measurements. The British Association began a practical standard in 1861; the unit was named for physicist Georg Simon Ohm in 1872.
Unicode keeps Ω for compatibility and recommends Ω for new Greek or mathematical text.
Technical and precise; used in resistance values and electronics specifications.
Some software standardizes equivalent text by changing Ω to Ω, erasing their distinction.
