What means
It marks the number eight. Ol Onal was devised for Bhumij, a language spoken in eastern India. Mahendra Nath Sardar began developing it around 1981; the Bhumij community group Adim Bhumij Samaj chose it in a 1992 script contest. Ol Onal has its own decimal digits, with values 0–9.
Why does the Ol Onal eight look different in old examples?
Its value stayed eight; its shape changed. Handwritten forms differed from the first digital fonts, which changed the designs in 2013 because the originals were hard to render.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
