old chinese hook mark

Old Chinese Hook Mark

3/7

𖿢 is an old Chinese hook mark, a punctuation sign that marks a break in written text. Depending on the manuscript, it can close a whole section or a smaller clause or sentence. Some manuscript forms are angled hooks; others look like tadpole marks. Fonts can draw their proportions differently. In modern Chinese, its use is chiefly scholarly transcription of ancient writing.

Text symbol

What 𖿢 means

It marks a boundary in an ancient written text. The hook mark follows a character; what it closes depends on the manuscript.

The recognizable hook form is attested in Warring States manuscripts and continues in Qin and Han writing on bamboo, wood, and silk. Older oracle-bone texts also preserve related line-based punctuation signs; they belong to a related tradition, not the same hook. Manuscript forms include angled strokes and tadpole marks.

In bamboo books from the ancient state of Chu, it generally closes a section; in Mawangdui silk manuscripts, it more often closes a clause or sentence. In modern Chinese, it is not ordinary punctuation: it is used chiefly in scholarly transcriptions of ancient texts.

What does 𖿢 mean when someone sends it?

It usually signals a character sample or a reference to historical writing. Alone, 𖿢 is best read as something being shown, not as a chat reaction.

If the context is unclear, ask which text or typeface it belongs to.

Scholarly and historical; in modern Chinese, it is a transcription sign for ancient writing, not everyday punctuation.

If sent alone, treat it as a historical-text sample, not an emotional reaction.

Why does 𖿢 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Ideographic Symbols and Punctuation block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
