What 𐓠 means
A nasal diphthong: “e” gliding into nasal “i.” A diphthong joins two vowel sounds in one syllable; “nasal” means air flows through the nose. The Osage sound guide compares its parts to the e in English “egg” and nasal i in “sing.”
For about two centuries, Osage writing used varied Latin-based spellings. Work on a shared orthography began in 2006 to reduce inconsistent spelling and confusion from English writing habits; the current letter set was agreed in 2014 and adopted by the Osage Nation in 2015.
