Person Bowing

Pick tone and gender in the tuner on this page; every form is the same deep bow, used to say sorry, thank you, or show respect. The bowing emoji usually follows a mistake or a favor. Its roots are Japanese bowing etiquette, where one bow comes in many depths — the emoji freezes just one.

What 🙇 means

A deep bow: sorry, thank you, or respect. In Japan the everyday bow is called ojigi, and how deep and where you bow tells an apology from thanks or a greeting. 🙇 freezes one deep pose, so your words decide which you mean.

One common account links Japanese bowing to Buddhism's arrival, with Chinese-influenced manners, in the Asuka–Nara era (538–794). By medieval Japan it was formal etiquette for samurai, the warrior class: lowering your head before a superior showed you meant no harm.

Many designs draw the figure kneeling with its forehead toward the floor. In Japan that pose is dogeza, the full prostration of a grave apology or desperate plea, so Japanese readers may see more weight in it than a simple bow — or a deliberately over-the-top joke.

Someone sent you 🙇 — are they actually sorry?

Believe the bow unless they're laughing too. After a mess-up it means sorry; after your help, thank-you; at the end of a work request, a polite sign-off. Add 😂 and it turns into theatrical groveling.

Stack them — 🙇🙇🙇 — and it stops sounding sorrier. A pile of bows reads as joking, exaggerated pleading: pleeease.

Formal and warm — a polite emoji that reads as meant.

Don't play-bow without a wink — sent solo, it reads sincere.

Worth knowing

  • Unicode added 🙇 in 2010 as a single figure; the man- and woman-bowing forms came later by attaching a gender sign to that same base.

Questions people ask

3

Is the bowing emoji sarcastic?

Usually not — on its own it reads sincere. A laughing face like 😂 or a whole row of bows is what tips it into joking, over-the-top groveling.

Why does 🙇🙇🙇 look like begging?

Repetition. One bow is sorry or thank-you; three in a row reads as playful pleading.

Could a bow after a game mean thanks?

Yes. At the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, visiting teams adopted the local custom and bowed to spectators to thank them, whether they won or lost.
