What ︻ means
It opens a vertical black lenticular-bracket span. Pair it with ︼; 〖 is the corresponding horizontal opener.
The horizontal pair 〖〗 appears in Chinese punctuation guidance. Japanese dictionaries use it to enclose a kanji (a Chinese-origin character used in Japanese) or its reading.
A 2013 Korean punctuation study identifies Wongakgyeong eonhae, a Korean-annotated edition of a Buddhist scripture, as the earliest example it knows. A Joseon-era royal office for printing Buddhist books, Gangyeongdogam, published it in 1465. The brackets explained words or phrases there; Yeongheom yakcho used them for supplementary text in 1485. The study reports Lee Seung-jae's theory that the brackets may have originated in Korea, noting that they are relatively rare in Chinese books. Unicode maps ︻ to the vertical form corresponding to 〖; this history concerns the bracket family.
How do I type the exact ︻?
Use a Unicode code-point shortcut. In Microsoft Word for Windows, type FE3B and press AltX; in GNOME on Linux, press CtrlShiftU, type FE3B, then Enter. Both platforms document these routes in 2026. HTML uses ︻; CSS uses \FE3B.
Editorial punctuation used for annotations and reference entries.
A lone ︻ leaves the bracketed span open; ︼ is its vertical closing mate.

4Questions people ask
1Why does ︻ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
