Vertical White Closing Corner Bracket

21/32

In Chinese and Japanese vertical text, ﹄ closes an open-corner quotation. Ordinary source text uses 『…』, with vertical layout choosing the display shape. Alone in a message, it reads like a closer with its opening half missing.

Text symbol

What ﹄ means

It finishes a white corner quotation.

The white pair is the open corner-bracket form of a quotation. The base pair is 『…』: 『 opens it and 』 closes it; in vertical presentation, that closing mark is ﹄. “White” names the open style. This is quotation punctuation, not a general right bracket.

For Chinese quotation marks, an early printed example appears in Wang Yuchu’s 1897 Chinese spelling book 拼音字谱: it lists ten new marks, including 释明之号 (“mark for clarifying meaning”). Japanese print punctuation also shifted under Western influence in the Meiji era. These are histories of the surrounding quotation conventions; ﹄ is the vertical presentation form of an established closer.

Why does quotation nesting change?

The nesting order depends on the Chinese style.

Taiwan and Mainland Chinese quotation conventions place the same corner quotes at different nesting depths. In Taiwan, single corner quotes 「 」 can surround a white pair 『 』; Mainland guidance puts double quotes first and single corner quotes inside. In vertical text, corner quotes can take the place of the curved quotation marks used horizontally.

Japanese corner quotes use 「 」 for quotations, text being discussed, and emphasis. The double pair 『 』 marks literary titles or a quotation nested inside another. Its use links ﹄ to East Asian quotation conventions, not to general square-bracket syntax.

Use the base pair in ordinary text

Ordinary text usually stores 『…』 and lets writing-mode-aware layout choose the display shape. Chinese text-layout guidance advises against inserting vertical presentation forms directly into regular source text.

For a document that needs this exact form, use your editor’s character-insertion method; Japanese IME conversion normally gives the base quotation pair.

A specialized vertical typesetting mark; alone in chat, it reads like a stray closer.

By itself, it looks unfinished; check for the opening quotation before reading a tone into it.

Questions people ask

2

Why does my font show 』 instead of ﹄?

That can be correct: 』 is the base closer, and vertical layout may show it as ﹄.

Can ﹄ close any kind of bracket?

No. It closes a white corner-bracket quotation; use a general bracket for grouping or mathematical notation.
