Prime

′ can mean feet, arcminutes, or a derivative: the surrounding notation decides. You’ll see this feet symbol in heights and this derivative symbol in calculus. It resembles an apostrophe, but precise notation uses a different character.

What ′ means

Read the expression, not the stroke alone. An arcminute is a subdivision of a degree in angle measurements. A derivative describes how a function changes; the prime follows the function’s name.

Prime notation for derivatives appeared in print by 1749—not necessarily the stroke’s invention.

Why does ′ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
