What ⇏ means
A does not imply B. Here A and B stand for statements. Knowing A is true is not enough to conclude that B must be true. The stroke cancels the implication expressed by ; it does not reverse the arrow.
For example, being an even number does not imply being divisible by four. Six is even but is not divisible by four, so it provides a counterexample: a case that disproves the proposed rule.
Eight is both even and divisible by four. That does not contradict the example: ⇏ rejects a guarantee, not the possibility that both statements hold. To disprove a general implication, one case where A is true and B is false is enough.
Mathematical notation for a precise logical distinction; in ordinary prose, write “does not necessarily mean.”
A ⇏ B does not mean “A implies that B is false.”

3Worth knowing
- Implication arrows were used in formal logic by 1922, and the double-line form is documented in 1954. These dates concern the underlying arrow, not the first use of ⇏.
