What ᚵ means

It writes g where older kaun could mean k or g.

A dot or stroke marks ᚴ as stung kaun (“marked kaun”), separating its g value from k.

Runes arose among Germanic speakers, probably in southern Scandinavia, in the first or second century AD. Roman letters influenced them, and their angular forms suited carving. Some early inscriptions from the second or third centuries AD name owners or makers, identify objects, or carry brief messages.

Medieval rune poems are Christian memory verses about rune names, not guides to every inscription. Fonts may draw ᚵ differently without changing the character.

Why does ᚵ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
