What ᛱ means
It writes K in Tolkien’s English runes.
Tolkien adapted historical Anglo-Saxon runes to spell modern English. He gave K its own sign, leaving ᚳ for C rather than asking one rune to cover both letters. The character appears on The Hobbit’s runic title page and in the moon-letter message on Thrór’s map. Moon-letters are hidden writing that becomes visible under moonlight in the story.
Why is ᛱ different from the Elder Futhark?
It belongs to Tolkien’s later English adaptation.
The Elder Futhark was an earlier 24-rune alphabet. The Anglo-Saxon runic forms Tolkien drew on developed later; in England and Frisia, additional runes entered use from the fifth through ninth centuries. Tolkien adapted that older tradition to modern English and gave K a separate sign. Read ᛱ as Tolkien’s addition, not as a rune that dates an old inscription.
How do I type ᛱ?
Use Unicode input for U16F1; font support varies.
If your device or app offers Unicode entry, enter 16F1 with that method. In HTML, use ᛱ or ᛱ. If it appears as a square, your font may not include the glyph; the text can still contain the correct character.
Literary and orthographic: in this system, the rune writes English K.
Its runic shape alone does not identify its alphabet.
