What 𝤈 means
It tells you what kind of contact the hand makes. In SignWriting, hand symbols show handshape, while contact marks describe actions such as touching, grasping or striking. 𝤈 is the single-grasp contact mark, not a drawing of the hand itself.
Symbols are arranged spatially to represent a sign. The grasp mark’s position beside hand and body symbols helps show what is held. To read the complete sign, you also need its other elements, such as handshape and movement.
Is SignWriting a language?
It is a writing system for different sign languages. Those languages have their own vocabulary and grammar; SignWriting records their visible movements and shapes rather than translating them into spoken-language words.
Valerie Sutton developed SignWriting in Denmark in 1974 after University of Copenhagen researchers asked her to record signed movement from video. It grew from her dance notation, DanceWriting, and was first used for Danish Sign Language.
A specialist writing symbol: on its own, 𝤈 is a fragment of notation rather than a conversational gesture.
