What ෴ means
It marks the close of a Sinhala passage or section.
In books handwritten on palm leaves, one kunddaliya generally served as a full stop; a series could divide chapters, paragraphs, or other larger parts. Some manuscripts ran text without spaces, so punctuation helped organize the page.
Printing brought new page layouts in the eighteenth century, and Western punctuation gradually took over everyday sentence-ending work.
Can I use ෴ as a normal full stop?
For a routine full stop, use a period; reserve ෴ for deliberate effect.
Choose kunddaliya in a quotation or design where its older, formal register is wanted. It is not a neutral substitute for the period in ordinary prose.
As of 2026, it reads as traditional or literary, not neutral everyday punctuation.
Read it as punctuation first; the mark alone cannot tell you why the sender chose it.
