What ㌏ means
It represents ガンマ, “gamma” in Japanese katakana. Katakana is one of Japanese’s syllabic scripts. In Japanese, ガンマ names the Greek letter, mass and magnetic-flux units, or technical terms in photography and chemistry; context sets the sense.
The square form comes from older Japanese text standards such as JIS X 0208, where multi-kana words fit one full-width cell (as wide as an ordinary Japanese character). The JIS series began with JIS C 6226 in 1978.
A Japanese full-width typographic label.
