square ha

Square ha

㏊ boxes “ha,” the abbreviation for hectare, a land-area unit. It lets those Latin letters fill one character cell in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean layouts. If the format does not require the box, plain ha is clearer.

What ㏊ means

It marks a hectare with the Latin abbreviation “ha”.

Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text often uses cells one character wide. The box lets two Latin letters fill one cell; it changes layout, not the unit.

Compatibility normalization folds layout variants into ordinary text, so ㏊ can become ha. Unicode’s NFKC and NFKD forms apply that mapping to the Latin letters h and a. Unicode recorded ㏊ in 1993; that dates encoding, not the boxed form’s invention.

Why does ㏊ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
