What ㍂ means
It writes the Japanese word ホーン in one full-width text cell. In Japanese, ホーン can mean an animal horn, a horn instrument, or a vehicle warning horn; the sentence supplies the sense.
The square form comes from Japanese character encodings that let some katakana words take one full-width cell—the width of a kanji, or Japanese ideograph. Japanese dictionaries document the horn sense by 1914, an instrument sense by 1937, and a vehicle warning horn by 1957–58.
Applying NFKC, Unicode’s compatibility-normalization form, expands ㍂ to ホーン. The Japanese word remains, but its one-cell presentation disappears.
A legacy Japanese text form preserved for character-set compatibility.
Questions people ask
1Why does ㍂ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
