What 🈰 means
It labels a runner in Japanese baseball graphics, using the character for “run”. In this set of broadcast symbols, the boxed 走 stands for 走者 (sōsha), the runner standing on or advancing between bases, not a run scored. Its partner shows 打, “hit”, for the batter.
The set comes from ARIB STD-B24, the Japanese standard for coding data and text in digital broadcasting, established in 1999. These TV symbols were proposed to Unicode in 2008, which is why 🈰 sits beside signs you may know from emoji keyboards such as (reserved) and (free of charge). Outside Japanese broadcast graphics and character lists you will rarely meet it.
Why does 🈰 show as an empty box on my phone?
Because it is a text symbol with no emoji artwork. Some of its neighbours, such as and , were made emoji and get a colour picture on most phones. 🈰 was left out of the emoji list, so it appears only if one of your fonts covers it; otherwise you see a hollow rectangle or nothing.
If you need something more widely readable, write the plain character 走 or the word “runner” instead. The box makes 走 a separate broadcast symbol with its own code point, but it adds no new meaning.

- The earliest forms of 走, on Shang-dynasty oracle bones, draw a person running with arms swinging; a foot element was added in later bronze inscriptions.
Questions people ask
2Is 🈰 an emoji?
No. It shares a Unicode block with emoji like and , but it was never added to the emoji list, so it has no colour artwork.
Does 走 mean run or walk?
Both, depending on the language. In Japanese, 走る (hashiru) means “to run”. In modern Mandarin, 走 (zǒu) usually means “to walk”, “to go” or “to leave”; “run” is an older, literary sense kept in set phrases.
