Sunuwar Letter Chelap

30/44

𑯝 is the Sunuwar letter chelap for a “ch” sound said with an extra puff of breath. It spells a consonant inside Sunuwar words. An older spelling used a sequence of letters for that sound; chelap gives it a dedicated letter.

What 𑯝 means

A “ch” sound with an extra puff of breath. Chelap writes this consonant within Sunuwar words; by itself, it is a letter sample rather than a word.

The modern script’s development is dated to 1942 and credited to Krishna Bahadur Jentich. Community history says older inscriptions on animal skin were copied and discussed in the 1940s, and the first script conference took place in 1943. These accounts describe a modern writing tradition taking shape.

Why did Sunuwar add a separate chelap letter?

To give the aspirated ch sound its own letter. Earlier spelling used carmi and hamso together. By the turn of the 21st century, users had added chelap and other dedicated letters to represent aspirated and retroflex consonants more precisely. Chelap belongs to that later expansion.

In Nepal, Sunuwar is used as an alphabet; in Sikkim it is used as an abugida, where consonant letters typically carry a built-in vowel. In Sikkim, the script appears in primers, poetry, historical and government records, newspapers, and linguistic works. The regional difference affects how letters function in words, not chelap’s sound.

What connects Sunuwar with Latin and Limbu?

The script was modeled on the Latin alphabet, but chelap is a Sunuwar letter. Sunuwar is not descended from another writing system.

A later Sunuwar vowel letter called aal was borrowed from Limbu. That is a connection between the scripts, not evidence that chelap itself comes from Limbu.

A lone chelap is best read as a letter sample or a post about Sunuwar writing, not as a standard reaction.

Don’t infer a reaction from 𑯝 alone; it spells a consonant.
